LASIK
For over 25 years doctors placed incisions in the cornea to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. In the early 1980s they began looking at lasers to improve the precision and predictability of altering the shape of the cornea. Now in its second decade of use, the excimer laser has added a tremendous amount of precision, control and safety to the surgical correction of vision errors. Using this remarkable technology, the cornea is reshaped to conform to your glasses or contact lens prescription, thereby reducing or even eliminating a lifetime of dependence on corrective lenses for over a million people every year.
The surgeon we refer to, Robert Fabricant, M.D., F.A.C.S. at Pacific Eye Institute Laser Center, uses the Ladarvision Excimer Laser System, the first approved tracker-guided, small spot laser system. Precision shaping of the cornea depends upon accurate placement of the laser beam. Even when you are unaware, your eyes are constantly making fine movements, many of which are beyond your control. Ladartracker uses laser and radar technology developed for NASA, to track the position of the eye 4,000 times per second, thereby maintaining accurate placement of the beam. Ladarvision's cool, small spot laser beam, less than 1 millimeter in diameter (about 1/144 the size of prior generations of excimer lasers) allows micron size reshaping of the cornea, offering precision previously unavailable to laser vision patients.
The Procedure
After your eye has been completely numbed using "eye drop" anesthesia, an eyelid holder will be placed between your eyelids to prevent you from blinking.
Next, an instrument known as a microkeratome makes a protective flap of cornea, which is gently folded back. During this process you may feel a little pressure and the microscope light will momentarily fade away.

Then you will be asked to look at a focusing light. At this point, the Ladartracker locks in the position of your eye, allowing you to relax while the small spot laser beam precisely reshapes your cornea in a matter of seconds.
Next, the protective flap is folded back into place where it bonds securely without the need for stitches. After Lasik, some patients report slight discomfort that usually goes away within twelve to twenty-four hours. Although post-operative results vary from patient to patient, most patients are able to pass a drivers license test without their glasses or contact lenses.

Are You A Candidate For Lasik?

In general, the ideal candidate for Lasik is over 21 years of age and has healthy corneas. Candidates must not have had a significant increase in their prescription in the last 12 months. People with certain medical conditions or women who are pregnant may not be good candidates for Lasik.
